Project FARE Spotlight: Lone Mountain Farms

Photos by Annie Zasadny

Nestled at the base of Lone Mountain and next to the Selkirk mountain range sits Lone Mountain Farms & Brewery, a diverse farm and brewery with fields of rare grains, hops, vegetables, and foraging chickens.

The location of Lone Mountain Farms is perfect for growing hops and grains, which allows owners Luke and Emily Black a unique opportunity to create beers grown and brewed on the same farm. They are devoted to seeking out rare and unique grains from all over the world, searching for the most flavorful grains to brew into their farm-craft beers.

The Tasting Room at the farm is closed for the winter, but Lone Mountain Farms is opening a Taphouse in Hayden, ID soon! Along with their farm-craft beer, they have plans for a seasonal menu featuring ingredients that are as locally sourced as possible. They plan to open in January 2022 at 324 W Lancaster Rd, Ste C, Hayden ID 83835.

How did you get your start?

Lone Mountain Farms began in 2013 growing produce, hops, and hens for eggs. We later expanded to growing rare grains and dove into brewing a truly local beer. The farm brewery began in 2019 and we sold directly through the Kootenai County Farmers' Market. Later that season, we open our farm stand for to-go orders, and in 2020 we received permitting to serve beer at the farm! This opened up the experience of enjoying beer right where it's grown.

How much of the inputs for the beer do you grow on the farm?

Our beer is inspired by historic and European beer styles. We utilize our farm grown grains and hops with our Munich style brewing method to craft beer full of flavor. We grow as much as we can on our 10 acres, and then source additional hops from other Idaho farms and grain from our farmer friends at Living Heritage Farms and Paulouse Heritage on the Palouse.

Who does the brewing?

Luke and his brother DJ are in charge of developing the recipes and brewing.

What is the tasting room vibe in the summer?

The tasting room has a welcoming and relaxing vibe and is a great spot to connect with friends! It is also unique because you can see how beer is grown.
